Preflight discussion at the Division of Police
Heliport on Olentangy River Road.
I am a sentimental fool - being in love with our downtown skyline and the design of the buildings in contrast
to one another.  We were circling COSI looking for a suspect who was reported to have been breaking into a
car.  As we were observing folks on the ground, I remembered to look sideways to capture this view.  The
river's mirroring affect was not noticed until later - reminding me that I think that we were a bit sideways
when I took this picture.
The Franklin Park Conservatory.  I miss the
"Amerifloral '92" exposition that once
occupied these grounds.

Understanding the duties, experiences, and challenges of Columbus Police officers has been a high priority for me.  During the
summer, I spent several Friday evenings riding with officers in cruisers in the Northland, Linden, South Side, and west side areas.  The
experiences were eye-opening and they provided first-hand knowledge to many matters of policing that I had before only heard in words
from citizens, the media, and public officials.  During my evenings experiencing Columbus through the eyes of police officers, my
appreciation for the value of the Columbus helicopter unit was reaffirmed as I witnessed the "force multiplier" advantage of having an
'eye-in-the-sky' to provide fast response to certain 911 calls.  On a sweltering August afternoon, I continued my orientation by visiting the
Olentangy River Road Heliport.  My campaign staff surprised me by having arranged for me to ride along on a helicopter shift.  Between
call-runs, I was able to take several photos - having forgotten that I had a camera around my shoulders - as I was listening to the police
officers and enjoying the view of Columbus from the air.  Seeing the City passing by below - reminded me how expansive the
geographical area of Columbus is - and that the boundaries between neighborhoods meld together when seen from above...
Columbus has so much green space - when the City's parks and the various school and college grounds are seen from the air.  The ride
along experience will be a treasured memory for the rest of my life!

Flying without front doors added to the
experience!  Usually two patrol officers are in
flight.  They can carry two passengers - in
tight rear seats.
The focus of this picture is the now empty
site of the former Timken Bearings
manufacturing facility at East Fifth Avenue
and Cleveland Avenue, north of downtown.
The challenge before the City is turning this
'brownfield' into usable space for
redevelopment.  From the air, the expanse of
the property takes on a differing perspective
than from the ground...
While I graduated from Capital University on the east-side, we are all fans of The Ohio State University.
Fortunately, the heliport is just down the road from the stadium, so I was able to capture this view on the way
to a call.  The new turf is stunning from the air.  Wish I had a season ticket!
